Well Crafted is made up of four co-owners who bring a wide variety of previous experiences, a shared love of local food, and a passion to make a difference in the world around us. The four of us met during our college years, while working together on student affairs projects, including raising money to build a Habitat for Humanity house together. We have always dreamed of working together post college. Our shared interests, surrounding food and community, has led us to the establishment of Well Crafted, LLC.
THE IDEA
Since graduating from Bucknell University (’ray Bucknell), we’ve shared a collective passion for community and food. Each time we were together we chatted about ways we could create a shared experience to bring people together through food.
While Liz and Ryan were photographing Laura and Tom’s engagement session, on a snowy late March day in upstate New York, the idea began to take shape. We asked ourselves, “What if we could start a business together focused on food as the vehicle to create change in the world and celebrate community?”
The fire had been lit…
WELL CRAFTED PIZZA IS CREATED
For the next two years, we held monthly Google Hangouts. We chatted about business names and locations, types of food to serve, and how we could actually turn our dream into a reality. We all agreed on one thing, whatever we did end up doing, it needed to be extremely well crafted.
Fast forward to April of 2015. We received an email that started with “Calling all spirited innovators, trail-blazing tastemakers, and enthusiastic entrepreneurs! Welcome to Remington.” We answered this call to action and learned of a new food hall that was being developed in the Remington Neighborhood of Baltimore. This was it, we were all in.
We quickly created a business plan, bought a Kettle Pizza wood fired attachment for our Weber grill and scheduled a pizza tasting. The tasting was a huge success! One attendee stated, “Their wood fired Purple Pesto with beet pesto, goat cheese and fresh basil was off the charts!”
Although the market didn’t end up working out, the Well Crafted Pizza fire was already roaring, and there was no way it was going to be put out.
THE TRUCK
We had spent the past 5 months working on plans for Well Crafted Pizza. “What do we do now?” we collectively asked ourselves. Ideas ranged from opening our own full scale restaurant to a simple pull behind wood fired oven cart. Nothing seemed to fit our vision quite right.
Looking for ideas on Pinterest, we stumbled upon a pizza oven built on the back of a vintage truck. It was incredible and beautifully well crafted. We immediately knew this was our next step.
A phone call later, we had a trip booked to Charleston, SC to meet the company that would become the fabricator of our Well Crafted Mobile Pizza Kitchen.
The only question that remained was what type of truck did we want our mobile kitchen to be built on? It had to match our vision and have a great story. When we heard about the availability of a 1949 Dodge Ram truck from a farm in Alabama, we knew it was the one. Liz’s Pop Pop would only drive Dodge’s. It was as if he was looking down from above telling us this was the one.
Well Crafted Pizza hosted our film screening party and we couldn't be happier with the turn out. The old, custom modeled pizza truck was not only turning passer-by's heads, but was a hit at the party. They do all the work for you - from set up to plates to clean up. These guys are AWESOME!
From initial inquiry - they communicate quickly and efficiently. It's apparent that they genuinely care about their business and their clients - and making some damn good pizza. Which brings me to my next praise - their menu is unreal. While I was filling out the questionnaire I couldn't seem to decide which kinds of pizza to choose because I wanted all of them! All of them were incredibly tasty and delicious - they offer quite the variety.
I CAN'T TALK THESE GUYS UP ENOUGH. THEY'RE GREAT FOLK, WITH GREAT PIZZA
If someone told me that one day I would be eating pizza out of the back of a pickup truck, I'd probably smile politely and think 'definitely not.' Well that all changed when Well Crafted Pizza rolled into town and invited me to their 'Pizza Preview Party.'
Probably my favorite pizza of the evening was the Bahn Mi, it has more of the delicious doughy crust topped with pork, mozzarella cheese, cucumbers, carrots, radishes, cilantro, and Chesapeake mayo. This pizza was super creative, and I loved the freshness from all the raw veggies.
